New Google Ranking Factors and Algorithm Update in April Month

What a month we had. Google released updates one after the other close to 60 algos in little over four weeks. From now onwards fooling Google that our website is popular and valuable by stuffing with keywords, duplicating content and building junk links is almost over.

For over a decade, Big Google was watching how seo companies were manipulating the algorithms set by it to our advantage. Google published in its blog the changes and tweaks made in algorithm in the month of April. Let us look at below:

Authoritative content: Google claims that with a modified signal it can identity authoritative content. This is still unclear how Google concludes ones content is authoritative. My guess is through number of social signals like tweets, likes and plus. Also the author of content displayed through rel=author that is through Google + profile. Influence in ranking changes of this update: No Idea.

Keyword Classifier: A big blow for the stuffers and spammers. High usage of keywords in the web page is the old mantra and certainly a strategy to rank high in Google. Google has better technology to detect keyword stuffing. Influence in ranking changes of this update: Huge.

Domain Diversity: Unlike in past, Google, Now, has limited the ratio of showing the same webpage for multiple search terms. Instead of targeting 10 to 15 high search volume and competitive keywords in homepage we can concentrate on sub pages. Websites that are getting high rankings for many keywords have given way to other websites. The keywords have cut down to 5 to 8 keywords for a website. Influence in ranking changes of this update: Medium.

  • Google finds relevancy among paginated results and ranks the website. It articulates the phrases from different pages that has continuity in content from one to other and ranks the keyword.
  • Penalizes anchor text over optimization. Targeting same anchor text for higher rankings. Think once again. Vary the anchor texts.
  • Ranking for the fresh results. This helps largely to the online new websites, publishing domains, portal sites.
  • Ranks for unique descriptive and meaningful title tags. Keyword stuffing in Title and Metags may sink your website to the new level of abyss.

New Bing SERP Showing Old Google Layout Now

If at all there is one search engine competing Google, then it is Bing powered by Microsoft. First time, Bing succeeds in drawing little attention by offering a clean layout.

By embracing a new look or old Google layout, it is sending strong statement that it is here to stay. With the new look one can read without distraction and space is more between the lines. The decision moving related searches from left navigation to below the sponsored listing is wise.

Lately I was disappointed seeing the layout of Google. Stuffed with many features; the timeline results from hour to year on particular keyword; offering various platforms like shopping, blogs, news; jammed with sponsored listings top and right; What Google once known for its simplicity now has a tight packed lay out. On one side, the left of webpage, features content drilldown by location, blog and timeline. The right side crammed with Sponsored listings.

And if you search for local keywords Google display results in a cluttered layout. But my complain is limited to layout and not results. Google is still giving the best relevant results and I have no intention to change the search engine.

However, Bing is not offering anything new. It’s following the footsteps of Google. Keeping the simple Google user friendly SERP won’t help Bing to drive the loyal customer base of Google. It has to give something which help visitors dramatically that they have never thought of. May be on the lines of Apple.

Google Penguin Web Spam Update - 3 Onpage Tips to Recover

Now that Google is sending its two Heroes Panda3.5 and Penguin to remove the poor quality content and less valuable website from search engine. The changes in website are inevitable. Penguin algorithm came at a time big websites are facing the duplicate content issue in their website. The more versions of panda released the less search traffic got for panda hit websites.

Adding salt to these wounds, Penguin is penalizing for web spam and keyword stuffed websites. The road to traffic recovery is hard. And regaining the lost paradise of Google rankings is much difficult. In this grim situation don’t hit panic button and jump to any quick conclusion.

For next 3 to 4 days check the rankings and analyze the traffic of website. Disappearance of rankings and lost traffic may occur due to two reasons. One, Penguin update or Two, Panda 3.5 update. I won’t give you any SEO magic wand to your rescue. There are no new instructions to follow. What the intention behind this post is make you remember the Google guidelines that forgotten in the quest of rankings.

Avoid high frequency of same keywords in Title and Description Tag

As I said this is not new to everyone. Make title tag and description meaningful and readable. Penguin hates too many same keywords in 90 characters of title tag and 150 characters of description.

Don’t stuff keywords in Header and Footer

Three years ago, a trend started in on page optimization. It was common to see the keywords of small font size with hyperlink to home page above or beside the logo. And who can forget the footer getting abused. Plethora of keywords completely occupied the footer of website. For a minute, stare the layout of the website. Do you remember the website designed without SEO elements involved in it? Please ask the first psd file of home page from web designer. See now how the website is, in the name of off page optimization. It’s completely filled with the keywords. Remove all the unnecessary keywords and bring back the beautiful website what it was once. Make user friendly and offer better user experience to visitors.

Change the writing style

Keywords, Keywords Everywhere No Information to Read. Are we writing for visitors or for Google? While writing keyword rich content we forgot for whom we are writing. We trained writers to create content primarily for Google. SEO team started editing the content. And coercively added the keywords at the start of paragraph, center of the body and ended lot of keywords in summary. Redo the content. Remove unnecessary two phrase keywords, three phrase keywords from the content.

How to Overcome The Unnatural Link Building Penalty

This is an extension of previous post on un natural linkbuilding penalty. Lately, I am getting phone calls from friends how to fix the issue of poor link building. Many friends of mine get warnings on un natural links in Google webmaster central.

I put forward the problem in my previous post. Now I share the solution of how to overcome this mess which we have all created over the years. For close to 4 years, Google never introduced a see saw change that has directly jeopardize the website because of spam link building techniques. If Vince Algorithm is for brands panda update is for Content this new Link building algorithm is for Backlins.

Now that Google evaluates the quality of back links with its latest technology. Put your feet in the Google shoes. Think. What would you have done to stop spam links? Same Google has done now. I won’t say every one of us has manipulated the back link algorithm. But some of the seo agencies has just continued age old link building technique. True, getting bulk links is time consuming but not as difficult as obtaining quality links.

First things first what a warning message in Google webmasters central mean.  Either you are going to penalize in next 21 days for your link building strategy. Or it’s already been penalized. If you have received warning and rankings has not dipped down remove all the junk links. If you have received warning and also rankings has dropped then remove cheap links and resubmit to Google.

Surprisingly we noticed phrase based keywords that got bulk anchor text links has got hit severely. It’s too early to judge that only anchor text keywords are receiving hit but so far only these phrase based keywords has been hit.

A typical process of this algorithm is find artificially built links, send warning and then penalize the website.

Link networks: Google is de indexing all the pages created by link Networks Company. The problem over here is same content and same anchor text has published in tons of websites. Already major companies received huge blow. Companies which are not in Google radar will get hit in coming months. Remove your links from all these websites.

Link networks set up by SEO agencies is also not an exception from this. While doing competitive analysis I have viewed lots of wordpress blog with a normal template that talks all kinds of industries just like article directories. Ask your SEO agencies to clean up the mess.

Blog roll links

Is it unusual linking website in blog roll instead of a blog? Is it unusual liking anchor text and not name of the organization or name of the blog in sidebar links? Remove all the links or change the anchor text or link to the sub pages. I recommend link your blog from sidebar links.

Anchor texts

Google has already devaluating the spam anchor text links. Edit the anchor texts and maintain vividness and diversity.

Mirror websites

Stay away from mirror directories and bookmarkings. Submit to popular bookmarking and nice directories. Request admins to remove the back links from their website.

Negative SEO a New Emerging Trend

Negative SEO has become new talk around the town. Will companies wage a bitter war against competitors for coveted no.1 position in Google? Is this become acid test to Google?

So what is Negative SEO?

Implementing techniques set as “spam” and “over optimization” by Google against competitors to push ranking down of competitor’s website. Now that Google introduced penalty against unnatural link building one can understand how this be used against competitors.

This is particularly true of Dan Thies’ case. When Dan openly praised Google for going strong against blog networks and spam links some people who are upset about new update set Dan as symbolic target. Some one set 1 million scrapebox links. The result: Dan got warnings and lost some rankings.

As the cliché saying goes, everything is fair in love and war. SEOs who believe in results and not ethics can use negative seo as a brutal weapon to overthrow competitors.

How negative SEO can use as throttle?
  • Building lot of anchor texts in quick time.
  • Building links from irrelevant websites.
  • Building too many no follow tag links.
  • Copying the competitor content and publishing same in authority website.
  • Not may all of the above work. This is just a wild guess and my personal thoughts and I don’t have any evidence apart from Dan Thies’ case.

Is SEO Community divided?

For the first time, SEO community looks divided. It’s I SEO versus you SEO. My SEO Company against your SEO Company.Until now people were following unethical practices to achieve rankings. Now people are affecting others website directly. Yes, previously too websites were affected but a position or two. Now the magnitude of consequence is unthinkable. Penalization may push you too low than you expect.

Did Google made a wrong move?

Without any iota of doubt, Google action is plausible. However, Google has little answer to help small business victims. How Google can judge one who submits website for reconsideration as a victim? Even Google finds this mess. Will this be considered as human intervention?

Sure, Google will be already in action to overcome this loophole. One more update may come. It takes time. Let’s wait.

Google Announces Web Spam Algorithm Update

Google send shivers down spine of Search engine optimizers who follow spam techniques. From the day 1, the Google is trying to protect SERP from being manipulated. The war is on not against SEO but Spammers who deliberately choose the techniques that are against Google guidelines.

The results of Google are improving by the year. This time too, like Panda update, algorithm affect tons of websites nearly about 3% of search queries show improved results. The penalization of web spam is aggressive in 2011, pushing keyword stuffed and unnatural linked websites to the new level of abyss.

Anchor text link play a critical role in the ranking of the website, where directories and bookmarking are easily available. Keyword plays a key role for website to be found. It is the title tag, footer links, meta description and below fold of the website are hot spots to place the keywords.

It is no secret that a website requires links and keyword rich content to be in top. While white hat seo dedicated in creating content and often used blog as platform, which help for readers and Google. Black hats SEOs used more of satisfying the technical guidelines of Google and forget what people want. They find out the loopholes of Google and try to maximize on it. This directly affected Google results.

Google has given name for this update as webspam algorithm update. It is strictly going after:

Keyword Stuffing

High usage of keywords starts from meaningless title tag and description, headings and ends with footer links. A visitor lands to website searching for information from Google finds only keywords all over the webpage. Some of them are in bold, italic or underline. Some of them start with the first word of the key phrase; the first two keywords of long phrase; or only specific key phrase and nothing else is totally garbage. Google is coming soon to hit these websites or has already slapped with update.

Duplicate Content

Two ways website can get involved with content duplication. One, stealing & publishing or copy & paste whatever same content in two or more websites is totally unacceptable to Google. Second, same content, in all the inner pages, changing only keywords in headings, title and meta tags and minute changes in body of the content. The latter affects really hard. As it is well intentioned content duplication exclusively for Google.

Link Spam

One who follows the back link automation services, Stone Age link building like blog commenting and signature links with anchor text. Automatically finding blogs and commenting same content by bots. These are come under link spam.

From the word go, in its blog, Google said they love SEO and this is not against “over optimization” as there is nothing a word like that. This is against Web Spam.

The Evolution of Panda and its After Effects

When Panda was introduced to the United States of America on February 24th 2011, majority article directories and portal websites got it. Leave the list of winners and losers of panda update aside for a moment and look back the seo strategies followed by these websites in pre panda era.

Pre Panda Era

Demand sites and article directories are some of the websites where content was being updated one after another. More websites are being founded across the internet. With a number of websites in live, competition is intense among owners of the site over adsence share. And competition is furious between link builders over obtaining anchor text back links from resource box.
At the time, user generated content production was high Google introduced a new web indexing system – Caffine, started to index new pages at an uncanny speed. But from the time of Caffine update, displaying relevant and quality content from blogs, news sites, forums, article directories became a challenge.

Post Panda Era

Today, most of the sky scraper websites seems not to be making a profit. Perhaps only sites like ehow, techrepublic and intiatimes have been able to keep its head above the rest. So what’s wrong with the panda hit websites or even the authoritive sites as business.com? Why is the panda not affecting the website like techrepublic? The SEOs, speaking in one voice on this, that it is the lack of quality content, bad user experience and duplicate content.
See the other end of the bridge lies ezine articles, business.com and mahalo.com. For ezine articles, having duplicate content became a bane. Websites like business.com has more to do with big ads on the above fold and poor listing of companies.
The owners of these kinds of websites have taken stringent action to duplicate content malice, against the submitters. The recent changes in homepage had assured me that their over importance on banner ads and thin content be cleared over a period of time.

How to Local SEO for Global Websites without Physical Mailing Address

One of the challenges in local search engine optimization is positioning ranks for website not having the local physical mailing address. Look at the Google SERP results carefully for your local keywords: 6 to 7 Google map listings have acquired the rank in first page out of 10 positions. The benefit of submitting in Google maps and owning local TLD extension domain is undeniable.

However, a well optimized website and with high quality links global websites can rank no: 1 position in Google. So here is the roadmap to improve the rankings and to compete with local business.

Local Landing Page

Dedicate the landing page by location. For example segregate html file name by demographic: abc.com/preschool/Bangalore/Karnataka.html

Meta Tag Optimization

If file name is to importance, the title tag is a strong indicator what the page is about. Use wisely the title tag: Location + product or product + location: Bangalore Preschools or Preschools in Bangalore.
Overusing the location words falls largely on the keyword stuffing. The Header tag should strengthen the products and not location. For example Montessori schools in Bangalore, Reggio Emilia Schools in Bangalore.

Unique Local Content

If you are trying to add hundreds of landing pages to the websites and replacing the location or physical mailing address you are creating a panda. Don’t create a website just for the sake of getting local traffic by duplicating the content. For a month or two you drive traffic but go down drastically. Create the reviews and user generated content and write unique content about the city or town.

Local Links

Building local links take more time than usual. Contact local bloggers to contribute content to your blog and at the same time be a guest blogger for their blogs. Get links from local business directories and portal sites. Target the audience in facebook and twitter by demographic.

Local search optimization for global business is time consuming. But aint impossible.

Google Sending Warnings over Un Natural Link building through Google Webmaster Tools

Harsh penalty on paid directories

Google’s recent focus on penalizing paid links is both understandable and justified. The sponsored link building has been rampant over the years and is one of the main reasons to Google for the latest action. Finding relevant links for websites, which is time consuming, has been an especially challenging task. Besides paid links, the webmasters is relying heavily on reciprocal links. Paid directories, though still at large, have been slowly coming down.

Some of the SEO companies are generally reluctant to spend the time that link baiting programs require. Dependent as they are on quick results and to meet their deadlines, they prefer bulk paid listings.

Google showed the exit to Blog Networks

The Google Spam team has slowly tackling the issue strengthening its technology to improve the quality of results. First it went hard against duplicate content publishing sites. Second it started de indexing the blog networks web pages. This specific measures aim at penalizing the blog networks to encourage quality content providers – the bloggers – to provide more quality content to visitors.

The new step is not the universal remedy that it is claimed to be. On the contrary, it is a reversal of past Google algorithms that set to rankings: Anchor text links. Typically seo agencies signed up blog networks and article marketing companies to get anchor text links. Many article marketers, who have many article directory sites and network of blogs, published the same content which in return offered anchor text links. Caffine technology come across millions of low quality pages in the recent past that are both duplicate and un worth to visitors. A steep increase in low quality pages and unnatural links is something that needs to be avoided.

The message is clear: Write quality content and treat back links as thumbs up vote to your service, product and information published in the website. And buying votes from others is totally undemocratic.

A Small Tale Of Latest Google Algorithm – SEO Over - Optimization Penalty

A Small Tale Of Latest Google Algorithm – SEO Over - Optimization Penalty

The Google Algorithm ghost is back to haunt the search engine optimizers. This time it is over seo optimization that Matcutts has advocated to seo professional attendees at SMXW. Mat Cutts, the official Google Webspam team Head, has raised the issue that the webmasters follow the optimization process of too great extent and achieve rankings with less quality content. In coming months Google can able to find and punish “ over optimized websites.” This is not the first time that Google is after search engine optimizers for the penalizing reasons. For the past 12 months, article directories and scraper websites were forced to take stringent actions against poor quantity content creators. The concern was that small percentage of optimized website could take control of the google first page even without providing relevant content whereas websites which are offering great content but unaware of SEO missing huge traffic from search engine.
The Google then introduced Panda an update on duplicate content from websites; it disallowed the google bot to enter to those web pages frequently, Google penalized WebPages and traffic went down drastically.
Let’s get this straight. If the concern is over websites that are not following SEO guidelines but producing great content, it cannot be fixed solely by the set of offpage or duplicate content algorithms. The over optimization websites in question may have cheap links deliberately built by competitors, or a link from website which once was a quality directory but now has turned into a junk yard because of other webmasters. Worse, if Google so wish, Competitors can even try malign the websites in some or the other way that are not great in advanced optimization.
Faced with such risks, the Google has two options. One, it can take only content and design into consideration to rank the websites. But that will be knee-jerk and is a sure will become more subjectivity. The second and more pragmatic option is to develop an online platform where webmasters can claim their ownership of website content instantly for free. And this can be done through Google webmaster tool and Google plus profile.

An Eulogy Of ORM – How to Push Negative Listing in Google

My Experience of Online Reputation Management

Three months ago, a mail reached to my inbox - a furious complaint by client failing not even to push the negative comment down for even one position. I devised a new plan. Last week things worked out. Immediately I emailed to client with proud. We successfully managed to push the negative page to 2nd page blah blah blah with Regards

High authorative links and fresh content are central to the well being of the ORM and its contribution to pushing the negative link down. If backlinks are poor, the website will not be attracted to Google, and those who build links give unique content and teach how to be interactive in social media, diverting their attention and dedication towards getting bulk links ends in getting junk directories and bookmarking. Additionally, without appropriate content, there is a limited guarantee of ORM results or expectation of popping up positive rankings.

Trying to promote just blogs, or engaging in all the social networking sites or opening new accounts of all web2.0 sites and publishing same content are often difficult to obtain ranking in Google first page; The futile efforts by executing above activities separately turned into disaster strategy with no results whatsoever.
Yet, any scientific evidence is not available supporting this perception, within a case study of my client and past experiences the above notion on ORM may work for you all.

Maintain vividness in targeting the online medium and platform. What we did here with this client is we focused only one blog platform. For example in this project we chose wordpress and frequently added the fresh content where as other blog platforms like blogspot and typead we used for building links to microsites and other important profiles that intended to push top page.

This strategy, surprisingly, found significant improvements in the Google. As a general strategy, microsites were first achieving positions, although quite some of them struck in third and fourth page for some weeks, Flickr and the facebook profiles took relatively some months to come on top. There were a few surprises. Twitter ranked comparatively low in positions. Google site page, on the other hand, has got great ranking and it was absolutely unmoved till now.

In many companies, content creation is too low to support link builders; the fact is content writer is needed. The first three months, in many of our websites, content was common. We published unique content on those indexed profiles. After profiles got cached from Google results started to fluctuate.

A number of factors result in pushing the negative listing. In many instances, content updating is the main factor. In certain instances quality links is needed, in addition to the content, to achieve the results. In flickr, a simple commenting: interactions with 5 new flickr users per day and photo sharing: one upload per day are sufficient to be in top place.

This project shows a range of realities for the online reputation management. Choose 10 unique web2.0 sites to rank in first page. It may be a blog, video sharing site, photo sharing site, micro site, Wikipedia, social networking site or micro blogging site. But do not focus to promote same web2.0 websites like blogspot and wordpress or twitter & jaiku or linkedin & nyamz. Choose unique web2.0 sites and use rest website to build links for all the 10 sites.

21 Essential SEO Tips & Techniques

Small businesses are growing more aware of the need to understand and implement at least the basics of search engine optimization. But if you read a variety of small businesses blogs and Web sites, you’ll quickly see that there’s a lot of uncertainty over what makes up “the basics.” Without access to high-level consulting and without a lot of experience knowing what SEO resources can be trusted, there’s also a lot of misinformation about SEO strategies and tactics. This article is the second in a two-part SEO checklist specifically for small business owners and webmasters. Last week, I shared 20 “don’ts.” Naturally, this week addresses the “Do’s”—things to make sure you include whether you’re hiring an SEO company or doing it yourself. Small Business SEO Checklist: The Do’s Small Business SEO Checklist: The Do’s

1. Commit yourself to the process. SEO isn’t a one-time event. Search engine algorithms change regularly, so the tactics that worked last year may not work this year. SEO requires a long-term outlook and commitment.

2. Be patient. SEO isn’t about instant gratification. Results often take months to see, and this is especially true the smaller you are, and the newer you are to doing business online.

3. Ask a lot of questions when hiring an SEO company. It’s your job to know what kind of tactics the company uses. Ask for specifics. Ask if there are any risks involved. Then get online yourself and do your own research—about the company, about the tactics they discussed, and so forth.

4. Become a student of SEO. If you’re taking the do-it-yourself route, you’ll have to become a student of SEO and learn as much as you can. Luckily for you, there are plenty of great Web resources (like Search Engine Land) and several terrific books you can read. Aaron Wall’s SEO Book, Jennifer Laycock’s Small Business Guide to Search Engine Marketing, and Search Engine Optimization: An Hour a Day by Jennifer Grappone and Gradiva Couzin are three I’ve read and recommend.

5. Have web analytics in place at the start. You should have clearly defined goals for your SEO efforts, and you’ll need web analytics software in place so you can track what’s working and what’s not.

6. Build a great web site. I’m sure you want to show up on the first page of results. Ask yourself, “Is my site really one of the 10 best sites in the world on this topic?” Be honest. If it’s not, make it better.

7. Include a site map page. Spiders can’t index pages that can’t be crawled. A site map will help spiders find all the important pages on your site, and help the spider understand your site’s hierarchy. This is especially helpful if your site has a hard-to-crawl navigation menu. If your site is large, make several site map pages. Keep each one to less than 100 links. I tell clients 75 is the max to be safe.

8. Make SEO-friendly URLs. Use keywords in your URLs and file names, such as yourdomain.com/red-widgets.html. Don’t overdo it, though. A file with 3+ hyphens tends to look spammy and users may be hesitant to click on it. Related bonus tip: Use hyphens in URLs and file names, not underscores. Hyphens are treated as a “space,” while underscores are not.

9. Do keyword research at the start of the project. If you’re on a tight budget, use the free versions of Keyword Discovery or WordTracker, both of which also have more powerful paid versions. Ignore the numbers these tools show; what’s important is the relative volume of one keyword to another. Another good free tool is Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool, which doesn’t show exact numbers.

10. Open up a PPC account. Whether it’s Google’s AdWords or Yahoo’s Search Marketing or something else, this is a great way to get actual search volume for your keywords. Yes, it costs money, but if you have the budget it’s worth the investment. It’s also the solution if you didn’t like the “Be patient” suggestion above and are looking for instant visibility.

11. Use a unique and relevant title and meta description on every page. The page title is the single most important on-page SEO factor. It’s rare to rank highly for a primary term (2-3 words) without that term being part of the page title. The meta description tag won’t help you rank, but it will often appear as the text snippet below your listing, so it should include the relevant keyword(s) and be written so as to encourage searchers to click on your listing. Related bonus tip: You can ignore the Keywords meta altogether if you’d like; it’s close to inconsequential. If you use it, put misspellings in there, and any related keywords that don’t appear on the page.

12. Write for users first. Google, Yahoo, etc., have pretty powerful bots crawling the web, but to my knowledge these bots have never bought anything online, signed up for a newsletter, or picked up the phone to call about your services. Humans do those things, so write your page copy with humans in mind. Yes, you need keywords in the text, but don’t stuff each page like a Thanksgiving turkey. Keep it readable.

13. Create great, unique content. This is important for everyone, but it’s a particular challenge for online retailers. If you’re selling the same widget that 50 other retailers are selling, and everyone is using the boilerplate descriptions from the manufacturer, this is a great opportunity. Write your own product descriptions, using the keyword research you did earlier (see #9 above) to target actual words searchers use, and make product pages that blow the competition away. Plus, retailer or not, great content is a great way to get inbound links.

14. Use your keywords as anchor text when linking internally. Anchor text helps tells spiders what the linked-to page is about. Links that say “click here” do nothing for your search engine visibility.
15. Build links intelligently. Submit your site to quality, trusted directories such as Yahoo, DMOZ, Business.com, Aviva, and Best of the web. Seek links from authority sites in your industry. If local search matters to you (more on that coming up), seek links from trusted sites in your geographic area—the Chamber of Commerce, etc. Analyze the inbound links to your competitors to find links you can acquire, too.

16. Use press releases wisely. Developing a relationship with media covering your industry or your local region can be a great source of exposure, including getting links from trusted media web sites. Distributing releases online can be an effective link building tactic, and opens the door for exposure in news search sites. Related bonus tip: Only issue a release when you have something newsworthy to report. Don’t waste journalists’ time.

17. Start a blog and participate with other related blogs. Search engines, Google especially, love blogs for the fresh content and highly-structured data. Beyond that, there’s no better way to join the conversations that are already taking place about your industry and/or company. Reading and commenting on other blogs can also increase your exposure and help you acquire new links. Related bonus tip: Put your blog at yourdomain.com/blog so your main domain gets the benefit of any links to your blog posts. If that’s not possible, use blog.yourdomain.com.
18. Use social media marketing wisely. If your small business has a visual element, join the appropriate communities on Flickr and post high-quality photos there. If you’re a service-oriented business, use Yahoo Answers to position yourself as an expert in your industry. With any social media site you use, the first rule is don’t spam! Be an active, contributing member of the site. The idea is to interact with potential customers, not annoy them.

19. Take advantage of local search opportunities. Online research for offline buying is a growing trend. Optimize your site to catch local traffic by showing your address and local phone number prominently. Write a detailed Directions/Location page using neighborhoods and landmarks in the page text. Submit your site to the free local listings services that the major search engines offer. Make sure your site is listed in local/social directories such as CitySearch, Yelp, Local.com, etc., and encourage customers to leave reviews of your business on these sites, too.

20. Take advantage of the tools the search engines give you. Sign up for Google’s webmaster Central and Yahoo’s Site Explorer to learn more about how the search engines see your site, including how many inbound links they’re aware of.

21. Diversify your traffic sources. Google may bring you 70% of your traffic today, but what if the next big algorithm update hits you hard? What if your Google visibility goes away tomorrow? Newsletters and other subscriber-based content can help you hold on to traffic/customers no matter what the search engines do. In fact, many of the DOs on this list—creating great content, starting a blog, using social media and local search, etc.—will help you grow an audience of loyal prospects and customers that may help you survive the whims of search engines.

Search Marketing Success Stories

Search Engine Optimization covers a huge range of tactics - all of which can bring direct benefit to a website. In this post, I've shared examples of different tactics used at different websites, and the effects that have been seen. If you're considering an SEO campaign for your site, or are trying to persuade someone else to invest in internet marketing, I hope this post will help demonstrate the potential of internet marketing.
The post includes real screen shots from Google Analytics (click any of them to enlarge) but the sites and data have been anonymized.

Target Your Target Terms

Remember that post about building a page with perfect keyword targeting? SEOmoz wasn't kidding around.
A website that sells homewares had issues with site structure and on-page targeting. Their category level pages were at subdomains such as
  • http://kitchenequipment.sitename.com
or
  • http://livingrooms.sitename.com
whilst each sub-category was back on the main subdomain at:
Category and sub-category pages had a distinct lack of semantic HTML or term targeting.
Getting appropriate H1 tags onto each page was a quick job, improving title tag structure took a bit longer, clean & friendly URLs and internal links with appropriate anchor text were also added.
The site saw ranking improvements across the board, which brought new traffic through head, mid and long tail terms. Can you guess when the changes were made? ;-)

Getting sorted in Google Local

Before getting into the nitty-gritty of ranking factors for Local Search, dead simple tactics, etc, it's important to get the basics right. A large chain of restaurants created a 'bulk upload' file with the correct data for each one of their locations. After uploading the file, they applied for it to be reviewed and 'whitelisted'. Local data that's been uploaded by the business owner and whitelisted is treated as authoritatively as locations that have been manually verified by postcard.
Despite various issues (Google's best practice guidelines still aren't quite the best solution in some cases) the traffic generated by visibility in Local Search has been significant and valuable. (The uploads were verified in late November when the traffic begins its steady rise.)

Architecture of Change

A current affairs magazine wanted to get more from their website. Because of falling advertising revenue, the publication was at risk of being closed down. They'd seen some growth from SEO already, but wanted to prove that the website had greater value.
Although the site had a good brand and some great content, it suffered from similar problems to many news-type websites, including badly archived content, duplicate issues and a CMS that hampered keyword targeting or promoting individual articles. Recommendations were made to improve the site's architecture and migrate to the new structure.
The effect of the changes was immediate growth which took the organic traffic to 257% in three months. A month later, the magazine's owner explained that the falling revenue from print advertising meant that they couldn't continue to lose money publishing the mag, and closed it down.

Hook, Line, Sinker

An office cleaning company wanted to improve the profile of their site through SEO. Amongst other tactics, a member of staff spent a day writing a 'linkbait' post to publish on their blog. This generated huge amounts of traffic from social media sites (dwarfing their regular daily visitors) and was subsequently linked to from dozens of sites. This post, along with other content published on the site to attract links, helped the site grow in strength and authority, and it now ranks position 3 for 'office cleaning' in their country.

Paid In Full

This is SEOmoz, but I'd like to share a graph from a PPC colleague working on a site that sells scooters. They were initially bidding on very broad terms (scooter, scooters, buy a scooter, etc) but the campaign was adjusted to target more long tail terms, including descriptions, specifications, etc.
Over a period of around six weeks, the cost per click was reduced by 30% and the more targeted traffic converted increasingly well - this allowed the site owners to increase their ad budget and generated more sales than their paid search campaign ever had before. If you're new to SEOmoz and this post has inspired you to get involved in search marketing for your site, do browse the site for the PRO & free SEO guides and the SEO blog. If you're a regular, do share any stories you're particularly proud of in the comments

Advance LInk Building Tips - How to Productize Link Acquisition and Dominate Your Niche -

Strategic Link Building: How to Productize Link Acquisition and Dominate Your Niche

This week, despite still being seriously under the weather (see this week's sad WB Friday), I flew down to SMX West to speak on the Link Building Strategies panel. Although I'd wanted to put more work in and deliver a better presentation, I received some very kind words afterward and requests from folks to share the deck via the blog. Before I embed the actual deck, though, I need to provide some context (as this isn't a wholly self-explanatory presentation).

http://www.scribd.com/doc/27894767/Strategic-Link-Building

Link building has, classically, been a tactic slapped on to a marketing campaign or website post-launch. I believe that those companies/sites that treat link acquisition as an afterthought, rather than building it into the product, will always lose out to those who treat link building strategically. In the deck below, I walk through a number of examples of sites, primarily startups, that have done this. These include:

Twitter - every user of Twitter has an incentive to link to their profile so more people will follow them. This is also true of sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, DeviantArt, Etsy & others.

Vimeo - nearly everyone who uses Vimeo appreciates the beautiful aesthetic they've created. The embeddable versions of Vimeo videos look and feel more professional and high quality than nearly any other player, hence they get embedded (a lot). This embed action automatically drives links back to the video on Vimeo's site, Vimeo's homepage and the user's profile, all with targeted anchor text.

Urbanspoon - not only do they give badges to restaurants like Yelp and have started an online reservations system like OpenTable, Urbanspoon also features reviews from bloggers and foodies, who are then incentivized to promote their inclusion on the site.

Last.fm - the widgets users embed on their site to share their favorite music automatically creates links back to the service.

SurveyMonkey - a truly viral product (anyone who's surveyed is automatically exposed to the site), SurveyMonkey is inherently link acquisitive through the product. In order to use the service, you need to link to SurveyMonkey's site, where your form is hosted.

Scribd - just look at the embed and the link below; 'nuff said.

Miibeian.gov.cn - possibly the greatest link building strategy ever devised. The Chinese government requires that all websites in the country link to this site in order to operate legally; not too shabby, eh?
Here's the deck:

As you can see, I've put in a shameless plug for Open Site Explorer at the end. If you haven't seen the new features launched yesterday, you're missing out. Tons of the data is completely free, and top pages is just about the easiest way to find traffic and link opportunities ever built (not that I'm biased or anything). :-)

Look forward to your comments about the presentation and the concept of productizing link acquisition into a site.
